Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registry: APhA Saving Lives
APhA has partnered with the Southern California American Red Cross Blood Services to conduct our 5th Annual Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registry on Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3 from 10:00 am-4:00 pm in the South Hall Lobby at the Convention Center. Every day, the Red Cross must collect more than 17,000 pints of blood for patients at more than 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. The need for blood is constant and every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Patients receive blood and platelets for many different reasons. Perhaps it's a premature baby, a family member with cancer or a friend involved in a car accident who needs blood. Whatever the reason, a shortage in the supply means that blood may not be available when it's needed most. Right now, the Red Cross has an urgent need for O Negative and B Negative blood donations.
Be The Match® offers you the unique opportunity to give a life-saving bone marrow transplant to someone in need. Thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases depend on the Be The Match Registry, the largest and most diverse registry in the world, to find a life-saving donor. Every day in this country, over 6,000 patients stricken with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle cell anemia search Be The Match in the hope of finding a matching bone marrow donor. Seventy percent of these patients don't have a matching donor in their family — so their only chance at a life-saving cure rests in finding an unrelated match on the registry. Sadly, 6 out of 10 will pass away without finding that match. Please help us improve these odds by signing up to become a bone marrow donor.
To be eligible to donate blood, you must weigh at least 110 lbs and be healthy. Donating blood takes less than an hour and can save up to three lives per donation. To be eligible for Be The Match, you must be between the ages of 18 and 60, willing to donate to any patient in need, and able to meet the health guidelines. Sign up for both will begin on Friday in the South Hall Lobby at the Convention Center.
By participating in the Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registry, not only will you be making a difference in the community, you will also be entered into a daily drawing for fabulous prizes! Please consider making a donation and giving the gift of life!
